You Make God Smile

This post just made me think of this quote. Love this movie. I am not saying this is God but it is probably his favorite Christmas movie. 😉 |
I was reading from my you version Bible app. The author spoke of how he knew that God in his grace accepts him. He figured it was a notch above tolerating him.
But he realized it is so much more than that. The truth is God delights in us.
I think of the ways that I delight in my kids. Like it melts my heart when my 5 year old son says, “Wait mama, I gotta give you a hug and a kiss”- before I leave.
Or it tickles me to watch the dance moves of my 7 year old daughter.
Or I think about the other night when I am tucking my oldest daughter (11 years old) in bed and she says, “It seems like our house has been a safe place for many people. I can’t wait to tell our new brother and sister how we dreamt about them. I already love them.”
For me delight seems to mean- bringing a smile to my face or joyful tears to my eyes or sometimes it causes me to stand in awe and being totally captivated.
Many nights our family stands mesmerized as we watch a spider spin a huge intricate web in front of our sliding glass door. It’s skills captivate us. But almost walking my face into the web has not been delightful.
Just watching our black lab puppy delights me. It makes me laugh as she jumps up to try to catch fire flys in her mouth.
Delight’s definition: to please (someone) greatly, charm, enchant, captivate, entrance, thrill, gladden, joy, gratify, entertain, tickle, bowl over, transports of delight, bliss
As I tucked my eldest daughter in- hearing her wisdom, insight, compassion bowled me over.
When I am delighted or enjoy something- I want to pause and bottle this moment up and preserve it forever. I want to spend more time with that moment and or person.
That is how God is with us. He enjoys us and wants time with us.
“For the Lord your God is living among you. He is a mighty savior. He will take delight in you with gladness. With his love, he will calm all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.”- a Bible verse from Zephaniah 3:17
Think about how you bring a smile to God’s face. What are those things that you think he delights in or is bowled over by you? This is not arrogance or pride but just helping to realize Jesus loves you, enjoys you, and delights in you.
For me I bet He smiles when:
- I crack myself up. I laugh the most at my own jokes. Jeremy thinks that is so funny.
- I do something silly to bring a smile to a child
- I send a note of encouragement
- I reach out to care for the forgotten or lonely
