Unplug to Recharge Your Soul
Do you often check to see if you have a new email? ….. I do
In brief moments of pause do you go to your phone to fill the time with social media? ….. I do
Do you find it hard to completely turn off your phone just for 24 hours? ….. I do
Does your always way too full inbox taunt you? ….. Mine does
Do you immediately run to your phone when it rings or beeps at you? ….. I do
“A smart phone provides nearly constant access to the noisy crowd of humanity. Jesus understood the danger of noisy crowds, so he regularly withdrew to the wilderness to pray.” – from my Bible reading plan this morning (Youversion app- the plan is called Finding Work Life Balance)
I love the prayer that ended my reading plan, “Heavenly Father, help me retreat regularly from the noise of the world, from too much work, from too many social events, from excessive entertainment, from smart phones that deliver the crowd constantly into my pocket. And after I retreat to you, Lord, help me to return to the crowd with the ability to hear its joy and serve as Jesus did. Amen.”
So cool that the selected verse today was from what I taught this past Sunday on being still.
Jesus said, “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me- watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” – Matthew 11:28-30 I would have to say this verse has been so true in my life. As I have developed the spiritual discipline of silence and solitude I have found so much peace and a way to live freely and lightly, most of the time 😉
I am looking forward to unplugging soon. This Saturday I will unplug from email, texts (I will keep my phone off and check at the end of the day for anything that NEEDS my reply), Instagram, Facebook, web surfing, etc. I plan to unplug for 7 days. My soul needs the simplicity, peace and quiet. I try to unplug every week for 24 hours (friday 5:00pm- Saturday 5:00pm) but this will be an extended unplug. I need to have Jeremy show me how to have an away message for my email/text during this unplugged time since I am away from technology
